    The primary function of the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) is to ensure safety at BWH. DEA provides the following services:


    • Guidance to hospital on all safety matters
    • Response to Environmental and Air Quaility Concerns
    • Chair of the Hospital Safety Committee
    • Fit Testing for all Hospital Employees
    • Liason with local, state and federal regulatory and accrediting agencies

    Patient Care Areas

    • Pre-Construction Risk Assessments
    • Safety Inspections for Construction projects
    • Fire and life safety guidance and enforcement
    • Assistance to Infection Control with assessments in Patient Care Areas

    Laboratory Areas

    • Annual training via Healthstream
    • Announced and unannounced laboratory inspections
    • Guidance on safe storage and use of hazardous materials
    • Disposal of hazardous materials at hospital laboratories
    • Partners Institutional Biosafety Committee liason within labs
