A number of offices and committees within Partners, BWH and MGH are involved with the oversight of research projects. Read on to learn more about their roles and responsibilities.
The Partners Human Research Committee (PHRC) is the Institutional Review Board (IRB) of Partners HealthCare. The PHRC must approve all human-subject research conducted by a Partners-affiliated investigator.
The Partners Human ESCRO Office and Committee have been created to provide institutional oversight of research involving human embryonic stem cells (hESC). The operations of this office and committee reflect the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Guidelines for Stem Cell Research, the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) Guidelines for human embryonic stem cell (hESC) research as well as relevant local, state and federal laws and regulations.
The Partners Human Research Quality Improvement (QI) Program is committed to providing on-going support and education to the research community. The knowledgeable staff works closely with the research community to ensure optimal conduct of human research within the framework of federal regulations, institutional policies, and good clinical practice.
The mission of the Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee (IACUC) is to ensure that all animals used in research, teaching and testing are cared for and used in a humane manner consistent with all applicable federal, state and local regulations and guidelines. Institutions that receive federal funds or use species covered by the Animal Welfare Act are required, by the Public Health Service (PHS) and USDA, to appoint an IACUC to review all research, teaching or testing activities involving animals and to oversee and evaluate the animal care and use program. Each Partners institution is responsible for maintaining its own IACUC.
The PIBC is the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) for Partners HealthCare. The PIBC reviews biological research involving recombinant DNA (rDNA), infectious agents, human and non-human primate materials, and biological toxins conducted at Partners.
The Partners Research Compliance Office supports the research mission of Partners and its affiliates. This office is a component of the Partners Compliance and Business Integrity Department, which promotes adherence to regulatory requirements and supports the development of ethical business practices throughout all of Partners.
